Axial/Mechanical back pain
- Herniated Disc
- Facet (Zygopophyseal) joint inflammation
- Spondylolisthesis
Sciatica/Radicular (Neurogenic) pain
- Sciatica-Herniated disc
- Spinal Stenosis
The majority of low back pain does not require surgery and can be treated with conservative measures such as physical therapy, medications, epidural steroid injections or selective nerve blocks. Disks are soft, rubbery cushions found between the bones (vertebrae) of the spinal column. In the middle of the spinal column is the spinal canal, a hollow space that contains the spinal cord and other nerve roots. The disks between the vertebrae allow the back to flex or bend. Disks also act as shock absorbers. They are high in water content and have a gelatinous center surrounded by tough outer fibers. There are a pair of small joints, one on each side, behind the spinal canal. These are called facet joints. The facet joints help provide some stability from behind while allowing the spine to flex, extend and bend sideways.
